The app American Slang Dictionary by Roberto Cagliero and Chiara Spallino is an excellent reference tool aimed to all those who have the opportunity to linguistic exchanges with the US world. The slang has become an integral part of the US language system and this dictionary provides the most comprehensive and updated reference to quickly meet the consultation needs of translators, cinephiles, advertisers, music enthusiasts, journalists, and anyone facing the everyday life aspects of an language in continuous evolution.
Special attention has been paid to the translations to provide a comprehensive meaning of a lemma, in its nuances and its synonyms. Particular attention has also been paid to the tagging of terms based on their specifications, such as IT, hip-hop and hipster culture, politics, sport, the African-American area, and many more. Also important are linguistic aspects such as acrospeak (the tendency to speak for acronyms and abbreviations, in typical American origin and then swept in Europe), the inversion phenomenon (that is to load a period of an opposite meaning to the original) and the proliferation of new words related to particular moments or historical events.
The app's interface has been redesigned to provide a simpler and more intuitive experience. You can swipe the definitions to the right to return to the search results and improve the readability by pinching the text with two fingers to zoom in and out. In addition, you can tap on any word within the definitions and look it up directly in the dictionary without having to type it into the search box. A main menu that can be activated via an icon available at the top right of the screen enables all the features of the app:
• Index search: displays in alphabetical order the headwords that match the characters typed in the search box
• Advanced search: lets you search for headwords, in the translations, and in full text
• Search categories: allows you to narrow the search criteria
• Settings: allows you to choose the font size of the definitions and the language of the interface
• History: keeps a record of the searches performed
• Abbreviations: displays a table with an explanation of the abbreviations used within the definitions
• Feedback: use it to provide suggestions, and notify errors, missing entries or other comments
• Our apps: displays an updated and detailed catalog of our offer
• Privacy and Credits: view legal notices about the app
