The Glasgow Coma Scale (ECG) was created in 1974, at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and to this day represents one of the most used neurological monitoring tools in the world. The scale combines the main key indicators of the severity of a neurological injury in a simple way, and aims to assess patients' level of consciousness in a practical and reliable way, in addition to having the advantages of easy application and reproducibility.
However, it has limitations in analyzing the verbal response in sedated patients, with language disorders and on mechanical ventilation.
In the original scale, the analysis of the severity of neurological impairment was based on three criteria: Eye opening, Verbal response and Motor response, which are scored individually and their sum varies from 03 to 15, characterizing the patient with mild, moderate or severe injury. . In 2018, there was an update with the inclusion of the assessment of pupillary reactivity, which can now range from 01 to 15. In addition, some nomenclatures were changed to simplify their application.
