Details

The Carbohydrate Counting strategy has already been recommended by Scientific Societies, in Brazil and around the world, for more than 20 years – especially for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes. This strategy differs from others, mainly because it improves quality of life and offer a range of food options for people with diabetes. Carbohydrate Counting is based on the proposal of healthy eating, in which all food groups must be used.

The secret lies in the relationship between the appropriate amount of food and its association with drug treatment. Therefore, the work of the professional Nutritionist in the multidisciplinary team is essential, specifically for the individualization of the dietary plan, according to the individual's nutritional needs. To benefit from the full effectiveness of this strategy, it is necessary to have a consistent manual on the nutritional information of foods.

The Brazilian Diabetes Society launched the first Official Carbohydrate Counting Manual in 2003, which has since been improved by expanding the list of foods to meet the needs of people with diabetes.
