■What is a family crest?
A family crest is a coat of arms that originated in Japan, and is a symbol that represents a family or clan.
It is said that in the aristocratic society of the Heian period, patterns were placed on the bullock carts that people rode to visit the imperial court, and these patterns became established as family crests during the Kamakura period.
The ten major family crests in Japan are wisteria, katakumi, mokkou, hawk feather, ivy, oak, paulownia, myoga, sawata, and tachibana. Many family crests are emblems derived from plants, animals, nature, buildings, vessels, patterns, symbols, and designs.
Family crests, Crests, and Kamons fall under Western symbols and coats of arms, and in Japan, they are used on tombstones, weddings, funerals, and other ceremonial occasions, as well as on hakama and kimonos with crests, and are famous as one of the world's leading designs.
