How can we live a happier life?
Simply put, it's about how well we can create space in our minds. We believe the three most important habits for achieving this are:
1. Moderate Exercise
2. Adequate Sleep
3. Mindfulness
Upmind developed the app with the hope that by supporting these three habits (especially mindfulness), you can create space in your mind and ultimately maintain a happier lifestyle.
We recommend 30 minutes of exercise three times a week, 7 hours or more of sleep (the optimal amount varies by age), and 15 minutes of mindfulness daily. While this may be difficult at first, we've provided numerous features, such as a 2-minute guided meditation, to make it easier to stick to even when you're busy. We encourage you to start with a relaxed approach to creating space in your mind, and gradually deepen your habit.
Why not try the Upmind app to help you develop the habit of creating space in your mind?
◆Upmind Features
[Overview]
Upmind features include a "Measurement" function that understands the state of your autonomic nervous system and recommends actions to improve it; a "Adjust" function that allows you to practice mindfulness practices such as meditation and yoga; a "Deep Sleep" function to help you fall asleep; a "Learn" function that provides medical information to improve autonomic nervous system balance; and a "Data" function that allows you to check measurement results and statistical information over time.
[Autonomic Nervous System Balance Measurement]
Measurement can be started by clicking the + button at the bottom of the home screen. By placing your finger on your smartphone's camera, you can measure your heart rate fluctuations. Based on this measured heart rate fluctuation, the app uses heart rate variability analysis technology to assess the balance of your sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous systems. This score is compared to your personal average and displayed as a score from 0 to 100 (please use this as a reference indicator of whether you have mental space). Depending on the score, the app will provide advice to improve your autonomic nervous system balance.
[Practicing Mindfulness]
・Meditation
Under the supervision of Masao Yoshida, Representative Director of the Mindfulness Meditation Association, we offer a variety of meditation programs. Incorporate meditation into your daily life and develop the habit of balancing your autonomic nervous system with the app. Numerous easy, two-minute meditations are available, allowing you to calm your mind even during busy times or at work.

You can even incorporate two-minute programs to relieve shoulder stiffness and back pain during your work breaks.

・Music
We offer a wide selection of music in four genres: Wake Up, Before Bed, Concentration, and Relaxation. Listening to music that suits your mood will help you spend your day feeling good.
[Sleep Support]
To maintain mental space, it's crucial not only to organize your daytime routine, but also to get quality sleep and rest your mind (brain). The app also features a variety of content to support good sleep. There's a wide variety of content to help you fall asleep while relaxing, including storytime narration by former NHK newscaster Riko Shimanaga and calming music to listen to late at night. Listen to these while lying in bed or on your futon for a comfortable night's sleep.
[Information for Improving Autonomic Nervous System Balance]
In addition to the content mentioned above, the app also features a wealth of medical information to incorporate into your autonomic nervous system balance. Simply understanding how stress works can help you better manage it. Why not learn more and apply it to your daily life?
[Data Accumulation]
Measured data (autonomic nervous system score, heart rate variability, heart rate) is accumulated within the app. Based on this accumulated data, the measurement score and suggested actions are optimized for you.
[Integration with the Health App]
This app can optionally be integrated with Google's Health Connect app. By linking your device, you can accumulate activity information such as your measured heart rate and meditation practice in the Health Connect app. Additionally, by allowing access to step counts and sleep data, you can check whether you're experiencing lack of exercise, sleep, or stress within the app.
◆ About the Collaborative Research with the University of Tokyo
With the aim of providing a scientifically proven and more reliable service, we will be conducting a three-year collaborative research project with the Ryu Takizawa Laboratory (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Education, The University of Tokyo) from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025 to improve the effectiveness of preventing and recovering from mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, and insomnia). Upmind aims to incorporate expert knowledge into its development and create a scientifically reliable app.
A study conducted in October 2022 confirmed that habitually practicing mindfulness meditation using the app for one month (an average of 4-5 times per week) significantly increased work productivity by approximately 17% (absolute presenteeism). We plan to publish our research results, including other improvement indicators, in a future paper.
◆ Donations to Save the Children
Every time you meditate on Upmind, 0.5 yen will be donated to Save the Children, an international NGO active in approximately 120 countries worldwide, to support children in difficult situations both domestically and around the world. Founded in 1919, Save the Children has been supporting children in a wide range of areas for nearly 100 years, striving to realize a world where children's rights are realized. It focuses on health and nutrition, including the prevention and treatment of malnutrition and infectious diseases, as well as humanitarian aid and education. When I meditate, I often think not only of my own peace of mind, but also of making the world a more secure place for everyone. I hope that through this work, more children who will support the next generation will be saved.
